Replacing your oil tank

If your heating system stops working or your oil tank has deteriorated, we can replace your tank efficiently and safely. As OFTEC registered technicians, we follow all the rules for building regulations and tank installation. We can also carry out groundworks to ensure the base the tank sits on is up to regulation.

When we get rid of your old tank, we do it safely according to the rules for dangerous waste. We’ll also give you a decommisioning certificate to show that your old tank isn’t in use anymore.

Just call us at 01387 733276, and someone from our team will help you find the right tank for your home.

What happens when we replace your tank?

One of our team members will have a chat with you over the phone and ask you some questions about your current tank and where it’s placed on your property.

If you can go online, we might ask you to send us some pictures of your tank and its base through email. This helps us plan our work better.

Sometimes, we might visit your property before installation to make sure we have all the right information. We’ll also check if we need to carry out any groundworks for the base.

After we’ve gathered all the details, we’ll send you a written quote. If you’re happy with what we offer, we’ll book you into our diary.

We usually try to fit our work around when you want it, and we always keep some tanks in stock for when installations need to be done quickly.

On the day we’ve agreed upon, we’ll come over early in the morning. For most replacements, we can finish everything in one day.

We’ll set up the new tank and handle all the paperwork required by OFTEC to demonstrate that the installation follows the regulations.

We’ll also take away your old tank and deal with getting rid of it safely.

Finally, you’ll need to contact your fuel company and ask them to come and fill up your new tank.

How do I know if I need to replace my tank?

  • Take a good look at your existing heating oil tank and check it for cracks, signs of rust, damage, or bleaching.
  • If you notice any damp patches on the floor, you may have a leak.
  • An unusual increase in the amount of fuel you are using is another sign that your tank isn’t working correctly.

Groundworks

A full domestic oil tank can weigh as much as 3.5 tonnes so it’s really important that the base it sits on is up to the job. According to the OFTEC regulations, the base needs to be:

  • Non-combustible, imperforate and level
  • Constructed of concrete, paving stones or stonework
  • Large enough to extend 300mm beyond all sides of the tank

We will check your existing base, and let you know if any changes are needed. Our team are all set up to carry out any groundworks that are needed to make sure that your base meets the regulations and that your tank is supported safely.
